What is Ju Jitsu?

Ju Jitsu (Sometimes spelled Ju Jutsu or Jiu Jitsu) is a Martial Art dating back over 2,000 years. Ju Jitsu is made up of two Ideograms or Kanji which translate as- Ju soft or gentle and Jitsu meaning Art in the sense of Martial Art, when combined it means the "Gentle Art",. The main premise of Ju Jitsu is to apply a technique with efficiency being soft on the practitioner and painful or hard on the recipient. Its origin comes from China in the system called Chin Na, which translates to "Seize and Grab". Chin Na exists in all systems of Kung Fu. This method of combat was the first to come from China to Japan. All Japanese systems have a root in some form of Ju Jitsu. Ju Jitsu has 3 general main areas of application: Striking, Grappling and Throwing. These applications are specialized in the Japanese Martial Arts of Karate, Judo and Aikido respectively.

What is Kihen Ryu Ju Jitsu?

Kihen Ryu Ju Jitsu is literally translated to "The School of Deceptive Power in the Gentle Martial Art". I formulated this system in 2006. After being involved in the martial arts since 1986, I felt it was necessary to present the information in an efficient and logical manner. The main premise of this system is to present a comprehensive and efficient system with three factors in mind: Morality with regards to physical confrontation, Lack of physical strength, and Maximum options.

What sets Kihen Ryu apart from other martial art schools?

Kihen Ryu Ju Jitsu is based on the concepts efficiency and realism as its foundation, although we have avenues to follow for sports and competitions we do not emphasize this in our training. We encourage you to use techniques not based on strength, adrenaline rushes or unrealistic scenarios leading to a false sense of confidence. Our training is based on generating power from the principles available to us from characteristics such as gravity from Newtonian Physics, Body Shifting (Tai Sabaki) to avoid powerful energy coming towards us and superior psychology to name just a few. We apply pain compliance techniques using weaknesses in the Human Anatomy as well as other techniques to control our opponent. We base our techniques on the assumptions such as multiple attackers, unseen weapons and the more popular risk of lawsuits for practicing the right to defend yourself. We also make available to the practitioner many choices on how to handle the confrontation appropriately instead of just one solution. The practitioner is the one who may be in the situation and they must decide what an appropriate response is, Kihen Ryu Ju Jitsu's goal is to maximize the choices and minimize the effort and risk when applying the techniques.

How old do you have to be to train in Kihen Ryu Ju Jitsu?

I've never done any martial arts before. Am I too old to start?

This depends upon the individual. All of our techniques are made the weaker person to overcome the stronger with proper technical application. The most difficult challenge to overcome is fear particularly as it pertains to falling. We teach an intensive program in how to fall safely so that the practice becomes second nature. The person who tenses up and hesitates will tend to feel more pain and may sustain an injury. Age is not a factor as much as personality and belief is. If you are healthy, willing and open minded the techniques will be easy and the chance of injury minimized. We have trained everyday professionals who had no athletic background whatsoever and have been successful in making them able to defend themselves with ease.

Do you spar?

No, we do not feel the need to create too great a limiting set of rules when applying the techniques. The techniques should be practiced as they will be applied. We practice the techniques in a slow methodical fashion building the reflex skill to peak perfection. Balance, Coordination, Timing and Speed are built through dedicated practice. Over time the attacks get faster and more random, the practitioner’s response will be more effective when the pathways are set and the reflexes are second nature not holding back the execution of a proper technique.

I'm interested in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition. Is Kihen Ryu Ju Jitsu the right style for me?

This depends upon the individual’s goals. Many of the techniques we use are illiegal in MMA competitions. We are teaching a comprehensive system that is designed to keep someone street smart and help them survive a physical confrontation in a moral and legal way. If you are interested in applying the techniques in an MMA competition they can be modified, however if this is your sole interest there are other avenues to pursue to quickly gain the skills specifically designed for such competitions.

Will I get injured?

In all physical activities there is always an assumed risk of injury. We place a tremendous emphasis on safety and practice in an refined and gentle manner as to mitigate such risk. You may encounter varying degrees of pain, but the goal is not to injure anyone.

I'm not very flexible. Is that a problem?

You will not be required to do a split or any such movement. Flexibility will come with time; most of the techniques are done within the normal range of motion.

If my opponent is Larger and Stronger than I am, how can I defend myself?

Our entire program is based upon these circumstances. Our emphasis is on the application of proper technique and psychology creating openings and advantages against larger, stronger opponents. You’ll be amazed at how much power you can generate and how easy it is to weaken a person using their energy against them.

Will I have to perform any religious rituals?

No. We train only in the physical and mental techniques of Ju Jitsu and we do not engage in any religious rituals whatsoever. So much so that we do not fully bow as other martial arts schools do we have a simple head nod and say "oos" when we leave or enter the training area.
